The Blink Saga

Ever since I grew up... that includes me stepping into the working world and having the means to buy myself needs-and-wants, including jewellery, it never occur to me that diamonds are pretty. Somehow everytime I pass by jewellery stores, diamonds didn't seem to catch my eye. There were so may other things that did. Usually, a pair of shoes, a bag, would most likely be the candidate in catching my attention, but never the blinks of a diamond ring/earring/necklace. Be it solitairs or trilogies.

I scourned, each time when i hear people saying that diamonds are girls best friend. I didnt' agree, because, diamonds were never really a part of my wish list, neither had i a single yearning for having 1. I didn't believe in getting one for myself, because the rest of the girls had it. I would have gladly kept the money for the next dive trip or a nice explorating vacation somewhere else. There was always a reasonable reason to NOT get a rock. And the fundamental one : Its a total waste of money.

I reckon, that answer it all.

Diamonds may be girls best friend - But they are certainly not mine. =)

However, Diamonds did not give up - she tries to squirm her way through to me. She seems to be wanting to be in my wish-list. She tried. And she tried. Again and again. I have to say that that poor thing did fail several times. She started to see victory with the aid of Baybee.

It all started not too long after Baybee and I started going out. That was early last year.... we were shopping in Bugis when he dragged me, almost kicking and screaming into the jewellery store. It was pretty embarrassing because it seems that HE knew more about that rock then me. I literally grew red, and i didn't quite enjoy that experience. I was 3/4 of time embarrassed at 1) I may appear to other people that i was trying to ka-cai-tao him (why do I bother I wonder??? haha - about other people, I mean) and 2) I feel so ignorant, bimbotic about not KNOWING about THAT ROCK. Its almost like all females are suppose to be born with that knowlegde or something.

Fortunately for me, I do get caught in mindless chatter with girlfrens on diamonds. Most of which I have filtered out, but, some percentage of those "garbage" conversation still sticked on. For instance, I know that a "D" color and an "E" colour could cost an arm and a leg. I remembered that someone said that its plain stupidity to get that, because its the price of 1 wheel of an expensive automobile. Heh-Heh.

Anyway, with that little knowledge, it somehow grew to quite a fair bit from all the rattles of sales pitch the jewellery lady was sprouting. Hehe - to show a little of my knowledge here.... Briefly, that is.

Diamonds come in different grades, and they are broken down into vary categories.

1) Colour
Usually, the top of the range colours will be D, E and F color. Then, a slightly lower grade color, which will cause the rock to look slightly yellowish - those colours will be G, H, I, J.
Anything below that, you will have a "white" diamond. hahah...

2) Clarity
There's I-F, which will cost all your limbs. Hehe.. That will mean that the rock is flawless under 10times magnification. Those are very rare. Usually, rocks will come in this clarity range VVS1, VVS2 - that will be a nice clarity range to get. But, pretty expensive. This will probably just cost 1 arm and 1 leg. The next range, will be VS1, VS2. These will definately be more affordable.

The V stands for Very. The S will stand for Slight. Hence, if its VVS1, that means its Very-Very-Slight. That is, there's very-very-slight specs of dust inside the rock. Its almost the top of the range, besides the I-F grade.

3) Brilliance
Brilliance will depend on the no. of cut the diamond has. Some range frm 55 to 87. ( I think) I didn't really absorb that much on this portion of the sales-pitch-rattle from the sales person. I probably should ask Baybee. he knows more of it then me.

Okie. That's all I know about diamonds. There's slightly more, but in bits and pieces, and most of it, i'm not too sure if I've gotten it all figured out.

Right now - I do have an interest in Diamond, but, I realise one thing. Its pretty addictive - once you seen 1, one will develope a slow, but potent interest in it. So, beware. :P

Despite all the previous non-attention, I have gotten one. Well, I wasn't the one who exactly got it... But, it is definately one ring that I will not exchange it for, given whatever circumstance. Its of significance value. One that is for a lifetime.

congrats on your engagement.. it was an engagement right? :)

i proposed to my girlfriend a few months back as well, and yeah, it's funny how some guys know more about the diamond than some girls. i think its a matter of the guy not wanting to get the girl an inferior diamond. and even if it cost an arm, a leg, a lung, a kidney and 3 months of salary, it's all good to the guy :)

btw, it's Kevin here (from TP), and you're linked on my blog :)
